Long-Suffering Is Not Suffering Long
Pastor Osi · 7 min read
"Separate a long time of suffering from long-suffering. A long time of suffering is a time when decisions in ignorance or humanity cause a person to go through suffering. Long-suffering is God producing fruit in a son through a season." This distinction changes everything about how we interpret the hard seasons. One is a consequence of choices made in the absence of wisdom. The other is a cultivation overseen by a Father who wastes nothing.
Long-suffering is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, not a punishment from God. The Greek word makrothumia means patience, endurance, steadfastness, especially under provocation. It is not passive endurance. It is active formation. The Holy Spirit is producing something in you that requires pressure to develop. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law" Galatians 5:22-23 AMP. Notice: it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Not the fruit of your effort. You cooperate with what He is producing.
"Long-suffering is vision-led decision-making for identity forming in a son." This definition is precise and it changes the posture entirely. It is not suffering without purpose. It is suffering with vision. The long-suffering has a target: identity formation. The Father is not letting you go through the season because He is indifferent. He is letting you go through it because something is being formed in you that cannot be formed any other way.
"The first part of the long-suffering was for nature; you now know who you are. The second part was for purpose." The season has two phases, and most people only endure the first. The first phase strips away what is not you. When those false identities are gone, what remains is the nature that was there all along: sonship. The second phase reveals what that nature is for. Purpose does not arrive until identity is settled.
The metalworking analogy is apt: "The long-suffering is almost like the fire, purifying everything that is not the nature in you" Isaiah 48:10 AMP. "Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested and chosen you in the furnace of affliction." The furnace is not punishment. It is selection. God does not refine what He intends to discard. The very fact that you are in the furnace is evidence that you are worth refining.
The 2026 annual theme at T.S.P is "The Year of Pruning and the Announcing of Sons." John 15:1-2 AMP: "I am the true Vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He prunes, so that it will bear more fruit." The pruning removes what is not fruitful so that what remains can bear more. It is evidence of the Father's attention, not His absence. You are not suffering long. You are being formed.
